What are gaming transactions?

From 14th April 2020 as a result of legislation changes in the UK you'll no longer be able to use any credit card for gambling. This applies to all online and offline gambling. Payments made face-to-face for lotteries are excluded and can still be paid for using a credit card.

Previously, gaming transactions included:

  • Purchases made to bet
  • Buying gaming chips
  • Any purchase made at a gambling establishment or on a gambling website
  • Buying lottery tickets

These were all classed as cash-like transactions, so you would pay a cash interest rate. This was charged daily, from the date we added the transaction to your account, until you repaid your cash balance in full. You would also pay a fee, which was always charged as a percentage. This was typically 2.99%, which is our standard rate, but there are some variations depending on the credit card you have. You'll find all the information you need in the terms and conditions on your monthly statement.
